Columbia Valley residents are urged to bundle up as a cold weather advisory is in effect.

Mainroad Group reports that freezing temperatures with flurries are in the forecast for the East Kootenay service area.

“We encourage everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight,” Mainroad says.

The company’s meteorological service is predicting the following conditions heading into the weekend: In the Columbia Valley, temperatures near minus -40OC are forecasted for this weekend, with temperatures beginning to drop drastically Thursday night. A day time high of -25OC is forecasted for this weekend. Light snowfall will begin tonight and continue to Thursday with snowfall accumulation of two to four centimetres forecasted.

Mainroad maintenance crews will be continuously plowing and applying abrasive until the roadways are returned to acceptable standards.

Motorists should use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather. Drivers should check www.drivebc.ca before heading out.
