A team from Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) had to use a mechanical device to lift a boulder off a trapped climber below Crescent Spire on July 2.
It was reported that a mountain climber’s leg became trapped by a boulder in highly unstable terrain in Bugaboo Provincial Park. Once they reached the patient, CVSAR used a device to lift the boulder off and free the individual, who was transported to Invermere for further medical aid.
On the same day, CVSAR was called to assist stranded hikers near Panorama Mountain Resort. The group was subsequently located and transported to safety with the help of Glacier Helicopters Invermere.
A third call-out on July 2 was a mutual aid request from Kimberley Search and Rescue near Top of the World Provincial Park. Members of CVSAR assisted in a multi-agency incident for a vehicle roll-over.
The public is reminded that, in the event of a rescue, they can help search and rescue crews by wearing bright colours to be more visible from the air. In addition, they can use the universal hand signal for “I need help” by raising two arms above their head (in a V shape).
