People who need a place to warm up during this cold snap are invited to hang out in Invermere.
The Columbia Valley Centre at 646-4th Street is welcoming anyone who needs to stay warm in its heated facility.
“We have plenty of room in our public lobby to work, study, read a book or play a game,” says the District of Invermere. There are washroom facilities and also free wifi on site. People can pop in today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Invermere Public Library (in the same building) is also a great place to seek shelter from the cold.
The Columbia Lake Recreation Centre is another option at 3050 Highway 93/95 in Windermere. Open today, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Some personal safety tips:
• Stay indoors as much as possible.
• Keep pets inside.
• Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.
• Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing instead of a single heavy layer.
• Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
• Keep cell phones fully charged.
• Follow recommended safety precautions when using space heaters, a fireplace, or a wood stove to heat your home. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
• Check on family, friends, and neighbours, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, and those who may need extra help.
