Dear Editor:

After all the controversy about the urban deer, I would assume that all of your reporters would know that the problem species are mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). They have a black-tipped white tail and additional white showing on their rump. In other words, they have much more white showing on their posterior than whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus), unless the latter has raised its white flag. There is an excellent example of the posterior of a muley on the front of your Friday, January 10th issue. Despite the caption, there are no whitetails to be seen.

Its an easy mistake to makeonce!
