Organizers are cooking up a storm this weekend for the 14th annual Feed the Town fundraiser.
Averaging between 1,000 and 1,300 hungry patrons, the food bank fundraiser at Copper Point Golf Club trades a full Christmas dinner for a donation to the food bank (cash or nonperishable food items), or for free if that is what your need is.
The dinner was the result of a cheeky remark by the president 14 years ago, who quipped they should just feed the whole town given the amount of donation requests constantly pouring in. The flippant comment got the owners thinking and they decided that would, in fact, be a great idea. Brian Schaal, general manager, says the food bank was in a time of real need so they decided to make the annual event a fundraiser for the Columbia Valley Food Bank.
Several other companies pitch in products and time, with Copper Point Golf Club staff and volunteers cooking up the feast with all the fixings, including turkey, ham, salad, soup, mashed potatoes with gravy, and pumpkin pie.
“Bring nonperishable food items, or cash or cheque. And if you can’t bring anything, that’s why we’re here,” says Mr. Schaal, “Feed the Town is for everybody.”
Last year, the event raised about $2,000 in cash donations and five truckloads of nonperishable food items.
Lawrie Mack, chair of the Columbia Valley Food Bank, says Feed the Town is always a great event and a lot of fun.
“It’s been such a marvellous event for us; every year, it’s one we can rely on,” Mr. Mack shares. “All those folks come out to get a great turkey dinner. We get to see so many individuals, to meet and greet and talk to them, and have the truck out to keep running piles and piles of donations to the food bank and we always get a huge cash intake as well.”
He says while cash and nonperishable food items are always appreciated, right now there is also a real demand for non-food donations such as toothpaste and toilet paper.
Feed the Town takes place Sunday, December 3rd from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The View at Copper Point. No reservations required.
