Winter in Motion

The Columbia Valley (Radium, Invermere, Panorama, Windermere & Fairmont Hot Springs) is kicking off winter with the launch of its Winter in Motion Festival and celebration of their World Record win for the Worlds Longest Ice Skating Trail, known as The Whiteway. The World Record was awarded to the Lake Windermere Whiteway trail in the spring of 2014; the trail will be opening at the end of December, as soon is the ice is thick enough to be safe the perfect time to celebrate the prestigious title win.

The Winter in Motion Festival (www.WinterInMotion.ca) will kick off on January 3rd with a celebration of the World Record and continue until the end of February. The Festival is a showcase of the variety and quantity of events and activities that take place through out the Columbia Valley during the winter months. With more moderate temperatures and weather than east of the Rocky Mountains, the Columbia Valley offers a winter lifestyle that works for everyone from extreme outdoor enthusiasts to those who prefer to curl up with a good book and admire the spectacular views from the comfort of some of some of the best accommodations available in the mountains.

We are excited to showcase the Valley to all visitors those who are familiar with the area and those less familiar will be delightfully surprised by the diversity of winter activities here, said Andrea Tubbs, Chair of the Columbia Valley Tourism Marketing Committee. A visit to the Columbia Valley in the winter is equally wonderful as a visit to the Valley in the summer, guaranteed.

About The Whiteway:

Measuring at over 30 KM, The Whiteway ice trail surpasses both the previous record holder Red River in Winnipeg and the well-known Rideau Canal in Ottawa. The Whiteway is a six meter wide stretch around Lake Windermere and is maintained by the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club; it can be skated, walked, biked, snow-shoed or skied and is easily accessible by the public from Kinsmen Beach in Invermere. It is also home to a number of signature winter events during the Winter in Motion Festival. www.TheWhiteway.ca
