After a quick battle with Pancreatic Cancer, Aly passed away peacefully with his wife and son by his side on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook. He was 86.

Aly was born on April 4, 1931 in Nuernberg, Germany and came to Canada in 1951, where he worked in the mines and road building camps across the country. He married his first wife Kitty and moved to Radium Hot Springs where they opened Smitty’s Restaurant in 1976. Aly met his second wife Kathy in 1995 and they retired shortly thereafter. They enjoyed square dancing, golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening and carpet bowling.

Aly is survived by his wife Kathy Mederer, stepchildren Shawn (Christine) Kohorst, Julie (Blake) Phillips, and four grandchildren Kyree, Zac, Quin and Bella. Aly is also survived by his niece Marion (Martin) Mueller, nephew Norbert Mederer and their children Michael, Matthias, Melanie and Marie all in Germany.

Aly was predeceased by his parents Josef and Maria and his brother Alfred Mederer.

As per Aly’s request, a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who so desire may remember Aly with a donation sent to the Village of Radium Hot Springs for the “Aly Mederer Memorial Bench.”
