Dr. John M. Martin

Born into a loving family of five siblings in Burnaby, BC. Jack flourished, both socially (Valedictorian: Grade 12), academically and athletically (many track and field awards). After a Bachelor of Science in bacteriology (Hon.), Jack finished medical school at UBC and moved to his beloved, beautiful Invermere, BC in 1954 (with Greta) to become one of only two “country doctors” within 80 kilometers.

Although his work as a doctor had incredibly long hours, and included stints as a vet, dentist, and general surgeon (all by necessity), he loved nature, his patients, his work and family. In his rare leisure time he enjoyed his cars (Ferrari, Lotus), skiing, target shooting and bird watching.

Jack moved back to Surrey in 1979 and practiced until age 70, still loving and helping his patients. During this time, Jack lived on an acreage in Panorama Ridge, Surrey with his teenage/young 20’s children. He always had a welcoming “open door” policy to his children’s friends, who loved his company and warmth. “The Ridge” is remembered by many.

Jack took up residence at The Waterford 10 year ago, and received wonderful care from the staff there. He spent his retirement doting on his grandchildren, reading and dreaming of his country practice in Invermere.

After many health challenges over the last 15 years, he died in Delta Hospital after receiving wonderful care from Dr. James and all the nurses.

A Celebration of Life was held on Thursday, October 3, 2013.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation at www.deltahospital.com would be greatly appreciated. On-line condolences may be placed at deltafuneral.ca
