John Kupchanko

August 27, 2018

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of John Kupchanko who left us peacefully on Monday, August 27, 2018. John was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario and was the eldest of three siblings and is survived by his sister Jenny Zwarych and brother Mike Kupchanko.

He was widowed by his beloved wife Audrey in December 2017 of whom he was married to for over 66 years. Devoted and loving father to three boys, Brad (Tamara), Dean (Jackie) and Loni (Robin). Proud grandfather of six grandchildren and his great-granddaughter Ophelia.

He became an electrician after leaving high school and was a proud member of the IBEW for almost 40 years. John traveled and worked extensively in the USA for the first few years of his marriage before returning to the Toronto area to raise his boys. He loved the outdoors.

He introduced the family to skiing and shuttled his boys to ski race events every Saturday and Sunday for many years. Both he and Audrey were accomplished skiers. He was always taking his family camping and fishing and built a cabin in northern Ontario where he spent most weekends every summer. He and Audrey followed their boys west and began living in Invermere in 1984 in the house they built. He loved Invermere, the lake and mountains, never missed watching the hang glider meets and was always already for fish & chips at the pub on Fridays. He spent his days in Invermere hiking, skiing, golfing and taking small motorcycle trips on his Harley, with Audrey on the back seat.

John always had a smile on his face and was known for his positive attitude. He will be greatly missed and remembered with much love by all of family and friends, including his coffee buddies Al Tristram and Rowly Cooper.

A private cremation has taken place. John looked forward to his 5 o’clock happy hour drink, so please raise your glass any day at 5 pm and make a toast to John.
