March 30, 1930 -
June 29, 2010

Teresa Cecilia (Schauerte) Axelson died on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.

Teresa was born March 30, 1930 in Pincher Creek, Alberta, the only daughter in a family of eight of John and Clara Schauerte.

She moved to Calgary in 1948 where she attended nursing school at the Holy Cross Hospital. She continued nursing until 1975.

In 1951 she married Arnold Axelson and over the next 12 years they had 9 children.

Teresa was predeceased by her parents, her son Eric; her brother Bill; and son-in-law David Palko.

Left to mourn her loss are her husband of 59 years Arnold; daughter-in-law Judy Axelson; daughters Sonja Axelson; Elaine Palko; Sheila (Stuart) Tutty; Denise (Dave) Shkuratoff; Cheryl (Bruce) Roy; son Shane (Sandra); daughters Marilyn Axelson; Ann (Steve) Recsky; 15 grandchildren: Luke (Janal) Hardy; Damon (Veronica), Alyse and Megan Palko; Rhiannon (Cameron) Oliver and Brendan Tutty; Peter, Brenda and Brent Shkuratoff; Matthew and Justin Roy; Michelle and Anders Axelson; Alaina and Bradford Recsky; 4 great grandchildren: Graycen, Benjamen and Tesslin Oliver; Emerson Hardy; six brothers: Emil, Joseph (Jean), Otto ‘Happy’, Paul (Arlene), Lawrence (Joan) and Walter (Jane); numerous nieces and nephews.

Teresa was an incredible artist from her sewing talents, to leather work, knitting and crocheting, and her gardening. But her greatest artistic achievements were her artwork and quilting.

In 1988, Teresa designed and made a beautiful hanging quilt to commemorate the Calgary Olympics. Over the years, she had won many awards for her art at the Calgary Stampede.

To celebrate the millennium, Teresa made each of her 15 grandchildren a quilt. This feat took her a little over 18 months to accomplish.

Creating one-of-a-kind quilts was a great source of pride for Teresa and she enjoyed her quilting right up until she went into hospital in February 2010.

Prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 2 and funeral service at 1 p.m Saturday, July 3 at Holy Name Church, 2223 – 34 Street SW, Calgary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society.
