A man known to police was scheduled for a court appearance on Sept. 6 following a dangerous incident in Invermere on Tuesday.
Columbia Valley RCMP report that a vehicle was observed travelling at approximately 190 km/h at 6:50 p.m. on Highway 93/95 near Dry Gulch. The driver failed to stop for police and was subsequently involved in a collision at the intersection of Highway 93/95 and Athalmer Road. The offender fled the scene before RCMP arrived.
One witness told the Pioneer that the vehicle was on its roof outside Black Forest restaurant where several fire trucks and police cars had gathered.
RCMP Sgt. Ed DeJong said officers located the driver later that evening and arrested him on multiple charges. He was taken into custody and brought to court today (Wednesday).
“This was an extremely dangerous scenario based on the speeds involved and could have easily ended with a serious injury or death,” DeJong said. “We are thankful no innocent bystanders or motorists were injured in this collision.”
