‘Sailing the Atlantic Ocean’
a narrative and visual presentation by Doug Smith at The Artym Gallery
Friday, February 7th, 6-8pm
In 2019 Doug, along with some buddies decided to get their captains license for sailboats. After online course study, the group did their practicum in Mexico and returned to Invermere as “Captains.” Except Doug needed more, so he signed on as a mate on a 60-foot Volvo racing sailboat about to leave Newfoundland headed to the U.K.
Known as the Marconi Challenge the race is typically 8 days. Smith never got to England. He ended up in Ireland 12 days after departure. Doug will present pictures and videos of his passage and will talk about what it was like to sail in spartan condition under challenging circumstances. From near misses to near death, Doug’s days aboard this high-tech boat are hilarious, serious, and captivating.
Friday, February 7th, 6 – 8 pm Doug Smith will be at The Artym Gallery. Grab a folding chair and join in, as seating is limited.
