Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 is honouring Truth and Reconciliation Week with a number of planned activities.

“We hope our efforts honour the resilience and courage of former students, their families, and communities, as well as support the process of healing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples,” the district said in a press release.

Activity highlights include:

• David Thompson Secondary School’s cafeteria will be exploring traditional Indigenous cuisine in their menu with ingredients provided from local producers.

• Classes will also participate in the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s virtual programming.

• Martin Morigeau Elementary School will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day through a whole school assembly, book sharing, and creating a ‘Heart Garden.’

• At J. Alfred Laird Elementary School, Elder Diana Cote will be sharing her story as a child of residential school survivors and will culminate this learning with each student collecting and painting a rock with a Secwe?pemc word.

The school district will also be hosting an “Every Child Matters” flag raising ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m., preceded by a community partners lunch at 12 p.m. This event will feature drummers from the ?akisq?nuk First Nation and the Shuswap Band, as well as the Shuswap Children’s Hoop Dancers and Elder Cote sharing her experience of residential school.
