Columbia Valley Pioneer staff

Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Services are sending out a warning to people that ice conditions are “not safe” for recreation at this time.

The department says that any time the temperature is between 0 and -4, the ice is holding but typically degrading due to currents and springs.

While conditions recently provided an excellent training weekend for the squad, it is “not safe” for people to be on the ice.

The department notes that clear or “blue ice” is what is needed for any strength and stability, and will take many days and nights of -15C to generate any depth in the ice sheet. So, in other words, please be safe and stay off the ice.
