Fresh on the heels of a drastically different year in 2020, farmers in the Kootenays are gearing up for what is sure to be another great season. In the coming weeks, the Kootenay & Boundary Farm Advisors are offering supports, workshops, and field days for producers in the region.
Last week, farmers had a virtual roundtable discussing the use of drones for agriculture. This new technology could allow farmers to work more efficiently, save money, and even operate in a more sustainable way.
Next week, Kootenay farmers will have the opportunity to attend our online “Lunch and Learn” technical serries on soils in the East & Central Kootenay. This is the time of year to start your seeds and mid-April, we’ll dig deep into seed starting with a virtual field day at Wild Flight Organic Farm in the Mara Valley about timing, efficiencies, nutrient management and season extension. In-person events are also making a comeback this spring that will take place outdoors and will be a welcome change to a winter of online learning. The KBFA Soil Club will spend two days learning how to map a farm to collect soil samples with Dr. Bill Chapman and in May, a regenerative agriculture and grazing field day will take place at the Karchuk Ranch in Kimberley.
